FAQs

Our puppies come from a select group of USDA licensed, inspected and regulated professional and hobby breeders who have experience in raising quality family pets. Petland puppies are veterinarian checked prior to arriving at our store and veterinarian checked while in our care.

There are several canine registries (The American Kennel Club, (AKC), APR, ACA, UKC) and others. Most of our puppies are registrable. You will be given the opportunity to register your new puppy at the time of purchase.

Buying a registered puppy means that its family tree is documented, though not all registered puppies are purebred. Purebred status indicates that the family tree is documented as exclusively one breed. Purchasing a registered dog does not guarantee better health compared to a non-registered one. The AKC (American Kennel Club) is the most renowned purebred dog registry in the country, but there are several others such as ACA, APR, and UKC that also maintain similar documentation.

Yes, all of our puppies are microchipped before purchase. And the microchip will be registered to you when you take your puppy home. If your puppy should ever become lost, there is a good chance that your puppy will be recovered because it has a registered microchip. In a pets lifetime, one out of three will become lost. Without enrollment registration and identification about ninety percent will not be recovered.

People who have allergies should consider dogs that shed very little. Breeds to consider are:Poodle, Bichon, Maltese, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Puli, and Havanese. Other low shedding breeds include: Miniature Pinscher, Bedlington Terrier, Chinese Crested, Irish Water Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier, Kerry Blue Terrier, Shih Tzu, Poodle crosses and Schnauzer

Petland is dedicated to providing our community the best puppies possible. That starts by working with great breeders. We work with USDA licensed, AKC inspected, and State licensed professional breeders and hobbyist breeders. Additionally, our franchisees, managers and Pet Counselors take multiple trips every year to visit breeders. These visits ensure that those breeders are meeting our standards and give us an opportunity to discuss with those breeders how to improve their puppy program. We are always looking for the socialization, veterinary care, and exercise of both the puppies and their parents. In recent years we have been working with breeders to do more OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) and genetic testing and are excited about the Perdue University Canine Care Certified program.

All of our puppies are adopted by our customers. The typical Petland puppy is in our store for less than 10 days. Petland has been in business for over 55 years. We know what puppies are going to find homes quickly. We work with wonderful breeders who select great puppies for us. If, for some reason, no one adopts a particular puppy in a short amount of time, we work hard to find the puppy home. We are very good at this. Our pet counselors undergo extensive and ongoing training in matching our puppies with our customers.

Petland makes every attempt to ensure puppies have a smooth transition into their new homes. Before a puppy is adopted, trained Petland Pet Counselors match the right pet with the right customer in an effort to ensure the needs of both will be met. Customers receive counseling from Petland Pet Counselors on the responsibilities of pet ownership. Discussions on housebreaking, chewing, grooming, and nutrition are among the topics reviewed. Petland promotes ongoing veterinary care and offers a $30 Store Credit if a veterinary exam is made within 10 days of purchase, to comply with the PA Dog Purchaser Protection Act. When a Petland puppy goes home, the new owner also receives a Puppy Resource Kit. This kit includes basic canine obedience training support with a toll-free phone number for free consultations with a certified canine trainer for the life of the Petland pet. It also includes information on Petland’s Enhanced Protection Program, including a lost pet recovery service.
